Over thousands of termite species exist in the world. Luckily there are some natural pesticides and repellents. Surprisingly, cinnamon is one of them.
Subterranean Termites
Four species of termites live in the United States: subterranean, drywood, dampwood and powderpost. Subterranean termites are responsible for roughly 95 percent of termite damage. They burrow up through the ground and into the support beams of your house on their search for food and safe places to build their nests. .
Cinnamon
Cinnamon oil is an essential oil that is effective in repelling termites. It should be noted that using cinnamon to repel termites is not the best or only option. According to the Journal of Pharmacognosy and Phytotherapy, the essential oils have a neurotoxic effect on insects. According to the Journal of Chemical Ecology, vetiver oil, which is distilled from a grass native to India, was proven to be a stronger repellent than cinnamon. Other oils effective against termites include: tea tree, clove bud, orange, cedarwood, and garlic. According to the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, clove bud and garlic oils are amongst the most effective oils for killing termites. The U.S. Forest Service identified tea tree oil as a potent termite killer. The pest control industry has also found orange oil to be an effective controller. Currently on the marker you can find termite killing compounds that contain cedarwood.
Applying Essential Oils for Termite Treatment
Oils can either be sprayed directly on the termites or can be applied directly in full strength to wood. Some oils, such as orange oil and tea tree oil, can be used during the fumigation process. If you are spraying termites directly, use 4 drops of the oil per gallon of water. If you need to increase the concentration, do so as needed. You might need to also do additional applications. Best results are seen with therapeutic grade oils.
