It’s important that every homeowner educates themselves on damage that might be indicative of a termite infestation. If you notice any of these things you should immediately contact a pest control specialist. Quite often these signs are indicators of an already advanced infestation. Here are a few signs to look for when identifying if you might have a termite problem.
Exit Holes in Drywood Termite Infestations
Because of the process in which they feed, Drywood termites construct elaborate mazes and gallery chambers within the walls and furniture in which they nest and feed on. Once a colony has matured it produces reproductive termites. At this stage the workers of the colony create small holes to allow the reproductives to exit the nest. Identifying and locating these holes will allow a professional to address a drywood termite infestation.
Mud Tunnels in Subterranean Termite Infestations
Subterranean termites do not typically leave exit holes. Instead, homeowners should look near the structure’s foundation for signs of mud tunnels. Because the tunnels are hidden within the mound they are able to protect worker termites as they journey above ground for food.
Termite Droppings (a.k.a. Frass)
Subterranean termites use their feces, or frass, and saliva as part of the building material for the mud tunnels. These wormlike mud tunnels run up walls or foundations. Because termites are particularly attracted to damp wood found in basements and tunnels, termites are often found within basements or emerging from them. Drywood termites create piles of pellets – droppings known as frass. Drywood frass ranges in color due to the color of the wood termites have been eating. All drywood droppings are six-sided.
If you notice any of these signs you should immediately contact a pest control specialist. They will help you determine if you have an infestation and what next steps should be taken to ensure the safety of your home.
